Gouda Pottery
In the first half of the twentieth century Gouda was the cradle of Goudaware; a product enjoying world-wide reputation. Numerous small family businesses arose, jointly putting a positive stamp on the city. Gouda has produced a great number of potters and designers. Many professional potters from elsewhere meanwhile felt attracted to Gouda as well. Their products were not only bought as utensils; many of them went to collectors, only increasing their value. Great names occur among Goudaware manufacturers, like Ivora, Goedewaagen, Regina and Zenith. Gouda has a museum specially dedicated to this area: ‘De Moriaan’. It gives a fine overview of the entire history of Gouda pottery. In the Gouda Cheese and Crafts Museum you can enjoy frequent, regular demonstrations of Gouda potterymaking and Goudaware painting. These demonstrations show you for instance how bowls, vases, pots and other objects are being shaped. They are organised by SBB students and assistants.
