The ‘Burgerhal’ citizens’ hall below the City Hall

The Gouda Cheese and Crafts Market takes place during the market season between De Waag and the back of the City Hall. In the last-named place you see the wide landing that used to contain the scaffold in days when punishments were widely different from today’s.

Below this landing you see the entrance to the ‘Burgerhal’ citizens’ hall; a historic, pleasant room underneath the city hall itself. It now houses a catering establishment and is worth a visit for a cup of tea, coffee or a drink while admiring its very special interior. And of course it also offers Gouda cheese dishes as well. Outside, underneath the landing, there is another pleasant pavement offering a view of De Waag and the Gouda Cheese Market on Thursdays in the season.
The Burgerhal used to have a great many functions; meat hall from 1526 onwards and converted into a butter hall in 1853 for farmers’ wives to offer butter and cheese for sale. Now the hall is frequently used for receptions and do’s.

Opening Hours
The Burgerhal is open to the public each Thursday morning during the Gouda Cheese and Crafts Market and on Saturdays during the goods market.
